Hamilton Undergraduate Research Scholarships

The NCSR Hamilton Undergraduate Research Scholarship provides students with first-hand experience of a research environment. The Hamilton programme seeks to excite a lasting interest in Science & Technology at all levels of education and increase awareness of NCSR research.

Scholarship projects are drawn from the broad range of research being carried out within the centre. Projects are carried out in NCSR laboratories for a period of two to three months during the summer. Each student is assigned a mentor to supervise and support their work. Students are paid a weekly stipend.

In 2010, the NCSR is offering two Hamilton Research Scholarships for undergraduate science and engineering students. These 10-week scholarships provided students with direct experience of laboratory research, where they were integrated members of a multi-disciplinary team. The programme aims to give students an opportunity to extend themselves intellectually, beyond the limits of degree course and gain valuable experience for their future careers. For more about the 2009 scholars, please click here or see below.

How to Apply:
The 2010 scholarship will commence on 7th June until 13th August 2010. Students will receive a stipend of €300 per week and there are two positions available. Applications will be accepted from full-time 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students pursuing a degree in science/engineering. Please email: the application form, your CV including your educational achievements to date, indicate which project you are interested in carrying out and a short statement (1 page max) outlining why you wish to apply for the Hamilton Programme to: aoife.white@dcu.ie. Hamilton Undergraduate Research Scholarship 2009

In 2000 the NCSR is host to two Hamilton Scholars, Slavica Koprivica and Oshoke Ikpekha.

Slavica studies Chemistry in the University of Belgrade, Serbia and she was working with Prof. Dermot Diamond and Dr. Fernando Benito Lopez in the Adaptive Sensors Laboratory on the 'Integration of miniature, ultrasensitive chemical sensors in microfluidic devices.'

Oshoke (Wil) studies Biomedical Engineering at Dublin City University and he was working with Prof. Tony Ricco and Dr. Lourdes Basabe-Desmonts in the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute on a project entitled ' Thermal control for nucleic-acid amplification based microfluidic devices.'

Throughout the programme each student attended a number of workshops that equiped them with skills such as communications, project design and teamwork. Each year the scholarships culminates with a symposium where each student presents their work through an oral presentation and an academic poster.

This years symposium was held in conjunction with the Beaufort Scholarship Symposium as both scholarships are run in tandem. During this event, each of the scholars presented the research they have been carrying out during the last ten weeks by giving clear and informative presentations.

The NCSR would like to congratulate each of the students on the successful work carried out by each of the during the summer. We would like to thank the students' supervisors, Prof. Dermot Diamond, Dr. Fernando Benito Lopez and all of the Adaptive Sensors Group who hosted Slavica, and Prof. Tony Ricco, Dr. Lourdes Basabe-Desmonts and all of the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute who hosted Oshoke. We would also like to thank Dr. Aoife MacCormac, Ms. Emma O'Brien and the BDI E&O team for all of their assistance throughout the programme.
