Policy

The aim of the National Centre for Sensor Research is to promote the transfer of research knowledge generated by its members, to the wider economy to enhance economic growth. To achieve this works closely with the Invent Centre, also based in Dublin City University. Invent's mission is to transform knowledge into commercial success. They specialise in adding value to the outcomes of research at an early stage and foster links between emerging technologies devloped by university researchers and the financial and entrepreneurial resources of industry and business [Invent Commercialisation Handbook - An Introductory Guide for Researchers].

In partnership, technology transfer is accomplished through:

  • collaborative research
  • consultancy services
  • licensing of intellectual property
  • spin-off companies
  • graduate/ postgraduate output

The centre has a flexible approach to the management of intellectual property to adapt to the specific needs of industrial partners. Collaborative projects can range from long-term fundamental research to short-term feasibility studies to minimise initial investment costs. Also, a number of support mechanisms are available from national & international funding agencies to support collaborative research.

The NCSR research programme covers a broad spectrum of activities from fundamental investigations to applied research in the applications areas of bioanalytical science, wireless sensor networks, Point-of-Care devices and environmental monitoring.

Fundamental to the long-term commercialisation of research knowledge within the NCSR is the proven track record of translation from fundamental research to applied via commercialisation. A number of spin-off companies have been established out of NCSR research and extensive patent license agreements are under negotiation.

The NCSR has a diverse range of research projects and technologies with significant commercialisation potential. The NCSR welcome approaches from prospective partners for informal discussions on the centre's research activities and commercialisation opportunities.
